Dear my sister
Sarah
How are you doing? It has been a long time that we met since you are still in New Zealand and I am here in America. It has already been 6 weeks that I have started this English Composition I course and it seems like I am a better writer compare to myself 6 weeks ago. I learned so many things in this course so far, how to create a blog, how to post various types of articles and how to write a creative non-fiction essay. First of all, I had to create this blog as an electric portfolio and this was the first time in my life. I have never imagined that I would get a blog for myself, since I always thought that using a computer is so difficult internet surfing, creating documents on word, and making power point. Professor Mangini said that if we learn how to create this type of internet page for myself, I could use this portfolio to represent myself in the future, and this computer skill would be a great advantage for my job in the future. Once I have learned how to create the blog, next was the writing part. There were two parts, one was the blog posting and the other was writing creative non-fiction essay. Throughout the blog posting, I could express my idea with a great freedom. Even that site was open to the other readers but still, it was a great chance for me to write not only formal level in ENG 100 course but also about some general topics like reflection on my class or home life. I also added some videos and pictures that could bring the reader’s attention and help them to have better understanding even without reading the post. The other part was creative non-fiction essay. This was my first formal essay that I have done in ENG 100 course and I had something work and something did not work. Choosing a topic was easy as I had to talk about the events that happened a month ago. On the other hand, organize the essay by using the linkage between the paragraphs was a tough task. As I read the essay over again, in some place it made sense but in some place t didn’t. Therefore, I had to go over and simplify some parts. Cut down the long sentences and put some linking between paragraphs. Last thing was the reading that I have done in class. Those articles were linked to the writing process and they helped me a lot. 6 Ways To Be A Hemingway-Level Productive Badass by Drake Baer was really helpful. Why was this important? I used most of information that I got from this article on my first writing piece in this course was creative nonfiction essay, especially got an idea about how to set up a clean theme and how to bring out a better idea from your mind. Everyone knew I was Gay, Except my Brother by Brian Kennedy was really helpful as it made me to have a better understanding with the difference between showing and telling in writing which is one of the essential part in descriptive writing. I also learned that if I become detail and descriptive I can create an enjoyable piece for myself and for the reader. These are the things that I have done during this six weeks and I think they actually helped me a lot. I hope I can learn more things in the future and I cannot wait to see myself at the end of this course. Once I have finished the course I will share the things that I have done in this course with you! From your sister Grace |
