Dear my sister Sarah
How are you doing? It has been a long time that we met since you are still in New Zealand and I am here in America. It has already been 6 weeks that I have started this English Composition I course and it seems like I am a better writer compare to myself 6 weeks ago. I would say that
6 Ways To Be A Hemingway-Level Productive Badass by Drake Baer was really helpful. Why was this important? I used most of information that I got from this article on my first writing piece in this course which was creative nonfiction essay especially got an idea about how to set up a clean theme and how to bring out a better idea from your mind. I used my experience in Korea during the summer vacation as that was the most memorable time within my college life. At first I was really worried about the the requirement. How can I write minimum 800 words with my first essay? What do I have to start first? I was in panic but I thought about what professor Mangini said "just write". Also, I got some reflection questions and peer-reviewing by professor and my classmate after my first shitty draft. I figured out that I should put more details in my writing by using five senses which I did not use at all on my first draft, and also I should provide clear and detailed information on my conclusion for my reader. I had to create some spaces between each paragraph to help the reader to take a breath during my reading, and I have to create a better connection between each paragraph because as I read my writing over again, I found out that some of the sentences were not really clearly matched with the theme and if I just leave it like that, it will be uncomfortable for the reader as they can not build any connection or have a solid idea about my theme is in the story. Lastly, to create a better piece it was important to put a linking sentences between those paragraphs as everything on that writing should flow easily. I would say that throughout the reviewing, making my piece more interesting was possible but I still think that grammar would be a distraction for me as I have to be ready for the further formal writing. After I have done the find out any enjoyed this writing as it encouraged me a lot ! At first I thought the writing would be only boring and burden on my shoulder but I found out that If I become detail and descriptive I can create an enjoyable piece for myself and for the reader. Everyone knew I was Gay, Except my Brother by Brian Kennedy was really helpful as it made me to have a better understanding with the difference between showing and telling in writing which is one of the essential part in descriptive writing. However, it seems like the reading Zen in the Art of Writing (Ray Bradbury) did not really work out for me as it was really hard. To be honest, I could not even understand about the theme that the writer wants to tell throughout the story. I gave up many times during my reading, and I cannot even remember any of the phrase with that writing. What it means, this reading did not catch my mind at all. During that reading, I questioned myself why do I have to read this kind of story? Will it be any help for me ? It seems like that writing only drops my attention and energy towards this whole course. However, professor Mangini mentioned that even when I am graduated from school , we are all surrounded by language and even with our career it is all linked to reading and writing. He did not only gave an advice to us but also because of him, I have created a first blog in my life. I have never done any school work throughout the blog so I actually struggled a lot at first but as I am getting used to this, I actually prefer to put my works on the site as I do not have to keep all the papers and have a better skills with using internet it would be a great benefit for me with my future career. Anyway I would try to put more effort on my work and I hope I will get a better understanding and skills with my English by the time I have finished this course.
